Inside the O'Briens by Lisa Genova

Inside the O'BriensInside the O'Briens by Lisa Genova
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As a work of fiction I fervently disagree about the choices the author made regarding the people of the O'Briens's family with the HD, that said this one was more "felt" in a way compared to the last one (Left Neglected) but I don't think it is yet as good as Still Alice.

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

Left NeglectedLeft Neglected by Lisa Genova
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was not bad, but I liked Still Alice much more because it was more sad of course and in a way this book has its happy ending, in a way, but it seemed to me that this was much more clinical and the other one was more emphatic.

Non male, ma Still Alice secondo me era meglio, soprattutto perché era struggente mentre questo, tutto sommato, finisce pure bene, ma sembra quasi sempre troppo clinico mentre l'altro era piú empatico.

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

Still AliceStill Alice by Lisa Genova
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a real story, this one shattered my heart to pieces, even if I studied Alzheimer disease before, but told from the patient point of view it's devastating. Lisa Genova is a good writer and a neuroscientist and she actually take the vacant place left by Oliver Sacks. I'm going to read her other books right now.

Sex, Lies, and Brain Scans: What Is Really Going on Inside Our Heads? by Barbara J Sahakian, Julia Gottwald

Sex, Lies, and Brain Scans: What Is Really Going on Inside Our Heads?Sex, Lies, and Brain Scans: What Is Really Going on Inside Our Heads? by Barbara J Sahakian
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Short essay full of interesting information about the development of brain Imaging and brain scans. The most important parte, in my opinion, is not when will we be able to read some other person's mind, but how could we improve techniques and medication for people who had disease located in the brain: from Parkinson to depression the the fMRI could be so useful to improve what we already know and to change what is actually not working.

Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith

Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of ConsciousnessOther Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rovelli talked about this book so I read it but I found it lacking of deep meaning, due to my ignorance in biology and philosophy mostly, so I wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but at last is really short even if it is also sometimes boring. But trust me I would have loved to love the book, really.

The Angry Chef: Bad Science and the Truth About Healthy Eating by Anthony Warner

The Angry Chef: Bad Science and the Truth About Healthy EatingThe Angry Chef: Bad Science and the Truth About Healthy Eating by Anthony Warner
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I didn't like so much the "blog way" of the author to convey a lot of useful information and tips to identify and destroy the pseudoscientist' theories and their faith in whatever is in fashion at this moment (detox, superfood, clean eating, paleo, gluten free, etc.etc.). I would have preferred a more scientific approach to demystifying rubbish, but if it makes the book more readable, for me is ok.

Gastrophysics: The New Science of Eating by Charles Spence

Gastrophysics: The New Science of EatingGastrophysics: The New Science of Eating by Charles Spence
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Absolutely technical, but not in the biology way, mostly in the way it discusses how we decide what to eat, and why, and how smells and noises have a strong impact on our choices. After my recent studies on Neuromarketing, I was really happy that I came across this essay!

The Idiot Brain by Dean Burnett

The Idiot Brain

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If you don't have any background in Neuroscience this is the perfect book for you, because it doesn't indulge in overtechnicism but it still gives you the right amount of information needed to have a whole comprehension of the subject. In my case it was a little bit too easy but still an enjoyable reading.

Clinical Handbook of Mindfulness by Fabrizio Didonna (Editor)

Clinical Handbook of MindfulnessClinical Handbook of Mindfulness by Fabrizio Didonna
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well written, interesting, and most of all pretty clear in its subdivision in clinical problem and mindfulness approaches to them; I think this is one of the best handbook that involves mindfulness and clinical psychology. A must read for every professional.

Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young by Patrick Holford

Optimum Nutrition for the Mind: Learn How to Boost Your IQ, Improve Your Mood and Emotional Stability, Sharpen Your Memory, and Keep Your Mind Young

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There was really nothing new in this book, it seemed to me a sort of summing up everything I read in this last year about brain and nutrition, but I have to say that If you have read nothing about this subject, this could be the right one to start with.

Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime by Aubrey de Grey, Michael Rae

Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Pretty difficult, so I'm not sure I got the complete picture and, even more important, the way this studies are going to evolve, still it was an interesting reading that give me a glimpse of a lot of possibilities for the future.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Luckily I already studied many of the things told by this huge marvelous book, otherwise I would have been probably overwhelmed by the quantity and the quality of the things told by Kandel, who wrote another of my favorite book ever (Principles of Neuroscience). So I wouldn't recommend this book to many, but if you are a psychologist with a love for art and the brain, this is the perfect book for you.

Decisions, Uncertainty, and the Brain: The Science of NeuroeconomicsDecisions, Uncertainty, and the Brain: The Science of Neuroeconomics by Paul W. Glimcher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Long excursus trough the philosophy of science and the precursor of Neuroeconomics, such as Neurobiology for example. There is also the first explanation of Nash's game theory that I maybe understood, that is to say that the book is very well written, but sometimes can be a little bit boring.

Neurophilosophy at Work by Paul M. Churchland

Neurophilosophy at WorkNeurophilosophy at Work by Paul M. Churchland

Different essays, some of which were extremely complex for me to understand. Some others were easier and usual involved more philosophy than algorithms. This book is also almost 10 years old, so if you need the state of the art of Neurophilosophy, it may be better to look for some other book.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Some of the things written here (mostly the experiments on the animals) were already known to me, but together with experiments of humans show a very scary picture all together, still very interesting anyway.

Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thought I already know most of the things that I was going to read in this book, but it was not true and it was really worthy to trough "good and disgusting" things in chapters because I learned a lot and I had fun also.

On the Move: Mein Leben by Oliver Sacks, Hainer Kober (Translator)

On the Move: Mein Leben

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
