Review: Fold Catastrophes

I've read a couple of books by this author, so I knew what to expect, and I wasn't disappointed. The stories are very different from one another but all present a certain degree of challenge; with topics ranging from artificial intelligence to alien intelligence and zombies, there's something for everyone—even for those who believe in God.

Ho letto un paio di libri di questo autore quindi sapevo a cosa andavo incontro e non sono rimasta delusa. Racconti molto diversi tra loro ma tutti con un certo grado di difficoltà, tra Intelligenze Artificiali, intelligenze aliene e zombi, ce n'é per tutti i gusti, anche per chi crede in Dio.

Review: The Strangers

The Strangers by Naomi Alderman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a very unique novel, in which Alderman revisits the “what if” theme, but this time she doesn’t explore it through electric girls or algorithm modifications—instead, she uses little animals that suddenly appear in the world. I’m not even sure to what extent this can be called autofiction, because I know nothing about her as a person, and I hope there’s very little of her own life in the novel, since the main charachter certainly hasn’t had an easy life. In any case, it was a pleasant and easy read.

Molto particolare questo romanzo, in cui la Alderman ritrova il tema "cosa succederebbe se", ma stavolta non lo esplora attraverso ragazze elettriche o modifiche di algoritmi, ma utilizza degli animaletti che appaiono all'improvviso nel mondo. Non so nemmeno quanto si possa parlare di autofiction perché di lei come persona non so niente e spero ci sia poco di quello che ha scritto nel romanzo perché certamente il suo personaggio principale non ha avuto una vita facile. Comunque é stata una piacevole e scorrevole lettura.

Clarke and Leith are cuter than Collins and Brady, but despite that—and perhaps because of the ghosts (even though this time they didn't play such a major role, except at the beginning)—this story also struck me as mediocre. This series probably isn't for me.

Clarke e Leith sono piú carini di Collins e Brady, ciononostante e forse per colpa dei fantasmi (anche se stavolta non hanno avuto un ruolo poi cosí fondamentale se non all'inizio), pure questa storia mi é sembrata mediocre. Probabilmente questa serie non é qualcosa che faccia per me.

L'autrice organizza una storia piuttosto semplice arricchita di citazioni filosofiche e la rende scorrevole. Detta cosí sembra semplice, ma ci vuole una certa abilitá ad inserire Spinoza e Pascal random nella vita di un vecchio professore e della sua badante. Letto in una serata perché pensavo sarebbe stato un romanzo pesante ed invece no.

Perhaps precisely because it remains unclear until the very end how much is reality and how much is imagination, this book reads more smoothly than the other one—also because real life isn’t actually that turbulent, even when lived during the years of the revolution.

Stavolta la scrittrice cerca, attraverso registri ed archivi, di ricostruire la storia della nonna paterna e di come sia arrivata ad essere la persona che poi ha conosciuto lei da bambina. Forse proprio perché fino all'ultimo non si capisce quanto sia realtá e quanta immaginazione, questo libro scorre meglio dell'altro, anche perché la vita reale non é poi cosí turbolenta anche se vissuta negli anni della rivoluzione.

Review: Silver & Blood

Riela and Garrick avoid becoming a couple as much as possible for different reasons, and I’ll admit that the story really takes off after they clear up some misunderstandings, but in my opinion, the supporting characters play a crucial role in giving some substance to a story that moves rather slowly, at least at the beginning. Now I’m going to read the second volume of this duology as well, but I prefer Mihalik’s space opera works.

Riela e Garrick evitano il piú possibile di diventare una coppia per motivi diversi, e ammetto che la storia decolla dopo che hanno lasciato perdere un po' di fraintendimenti, ma secondo me il ruolo dei comprimari é fondamentale per fornire un po' di sostanza ad una storia che va piuttosto lenta, almeno all'inizio. Ora mi leggeró anche il secondo volume di questa duologia, ma la Mihalik mi piace di piú nella space opera.
