A memoir that is sometimes a science book and sometimes a psychological essay. If you ask me, the book is a little bit too long, but it was enjoyable.

Un'autobiografia che sconfina nel libro di scienze a volte, ed altre assomiglia ad un saggio di psicologia. Secondo me leggermente troppo lungo, ma piacevole comunque da leggere.

Short essay full of interesting information about the development of brain Imaging and brain scans. The most important parte, in my opinion, is not when will we be able to read some other person's mind, but how could we improve techniques and medication for people who had disease located in the brain: from Parkinson to depression the the fMRI could be so useful to improve what we already know and to change what is actually not working.

Breve saggio pieno di interessanti informazioni riguardanti le tecniche di imaging e di risonanza magnetica funzionale. La parte piú interessante per me, non é stata quella riguardante l'eventuale utilizzo di queste tecniche per conoscere quello che l'altro sta pensando, o se sta mentendo etc.etc. ma piuttosto quella riguardante l'utilizzo di questi strumenti per migliorare farmaci od operazioni chirurgiche su persone che hanno malattie localizzate nel cervello. Dal Parkinson alla depressione la fMRI potrebbe apportare modifiche fondamentali a quello che giá sappiamo e cambiare trattamenti che non stanno funzionando.

Rovelli talked about this book so I read it but I found it lacking of deep meaning, due to my ignorance in biology and philosophy mostly, so I wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but at last is really short even if it is also sometimes boring. But trust me I would have loved to love the book, really.

Rovelli ha scritto di questo libro e quindi me lo sono letto perché a detta sua (di Rovelli) tracciava l'evoluzione tra la coscienza umana e quella animale, del cefalopode in questione per essere precisi: il polpo. Devo dire che per fortuna che era corto, perché spesso mi ingarellavo in frasi come questa: il complesso cefalopode solitario ed idiosincratico e mi chiedevo esattamente in che senso parlasse l'autore. Averlo letto in inglese poi non é che abbia aiutato più di tanto la comprensione e soprattutto non ha alleviato la noia che ogni tanto mi ha sommerso. Però avrei voluto veramente amare questo libro alla follia, quando invece finirlo mi é sembrata già un'impresa...

Absolutely technical, but not in the biology way, mostly in the way it discusses how we decide what to eat, and why, and how smells and noises have a strong impact on our choices. After my recent studies on Neuromarketing, I was really happy that I came across this essay!

Molto tecnico, ma non perché si metta a spiegare la biologia della digestione, quanto piuttosto perché esamina attentamente quali sono gli stimoli esterni che possono essere utilizzati per influenzare quello che scegliamo di mangiare. Considerato che recentemente avevo studiato un pochino di Neuromarketing, sono stata contenta di essermi imbattuta, quasi per caso, in questo saggio.

I got the impression that in the end, the new things in this book are very few, and Dennet keeps on talking about the same subjects that he explained in previous books, so I'm a little bit disappointed, but I could also be wrong, but the point is that he really underestimates termites.

Stavolta ho avuto la sensazione che di cose nuove in questo libro ce ne fossero veramente poche, nonostante la marea di parole, e che gli argomenti fossero sempre gli stessi, quindi, insomma non é che ci sia rimasta granché bene, ma mi potrei anche sbagliare, tranne sul fatto che di termiti non ci capisce niente.

Pretty difficult, so I'm not sure I got the complete picture and, even more important, the way this studies are going to evolve, still it was an interesting reading that give me a glimpse of a lot of possibilities for the future.

Libro abbastanza difficile, infatti non sono sicura di avere il quadro completo della situazione, tanto meno di come potrebbe evolvere, nonostante questo una lettura interessante che mi ha dato una visione di un futuro pieno di possibilitá.

Absolutely brilliant, I didn't even have the slightest idea that Apis mellifera could have been so interesting, as I came across this book while I was study something completely different. So what we learn is that the original idea for the Star Trek's Borg come from bees and their organization shows how to maximise the useful interactions between the members of a community. Somebody should have distributed this book at the PD Congress in Italy.

Molto interessante, non avevo idea che l'apis mellifera potesse essere cosí affascinante, anche perché mi sono ritrovata per caso a leggere questo libro mentre stavo studiando qualcosa di completamente diverso. Quindi praticamente quello che impariamo é che l'idea per i Borg agli sceneggiatori di Star Trek gliel'hanno data le api, la cui organizzazione in termini di ottenere il massimo per la comunitá a cui appartengono é da manuale. Qualcuno avrebbe dovuto distribuire la traduzione di questo volume all'ultimo congresso del PD in Italia.

Questo é un libro molto piú serio di quanto il titolo potrebbe far supporre, specialmente se non si conosce l'autore, assurto poi alla gloria eterna con il nobel per l'economia e recentemente per il libro best seller Thinking Fast and slow. Non sono un'economista né ho mai studiato l'argomento, questo libro peró é chiarissimo e poi anche relativamente piú semplice per me perché parla delle "infiltrazioni" della psicologia nell'affinarsi delle teorie economiche, di microeconomia per essere precisi. È leggermente datato quindi magari potete anche leggere qualcosa di piú recente, ma per iniziare a masticare un pochino di neuroeconomia non é niente male, secondo me.

Such a cool book that I would have loved to keep on reading. I can admit I didn't understand everything but still it was absolutely brilliant. Algorithms are everywhere and we use them even if we don't recognize them, so after many epiphanies I was almost shocked.

Libro veramente interessante che avrei voluto non finisse ancora. Posso anche ammettere tranquillamente di non aver capito proprio tutto, ma quello che ho capito mi é bastato per decidere che fosse veramente brillante. Gli algoritmi sono ovunque e li usiamo continuamente senza sapere che sono loro, una volta portati alla luce c'é da rimanete a bocca aperta.

Brilliant! Mixing economy, statistic, psychology and going to some other subjects trough neuroscience, the author gives some easy examples to explain us the reason behind some of our inferences and why they could be wrong. Taken one after the other it's true that there are no special news but for the way the author has to use them together. To read and suggest.

Fantsastico. Con un abile mix di economia, statistica, psicologia e altre materie varie passando per le neuroscienze, l'autore fornisce facili esempi per spiegare la maggior parte delle nostre inferenze e le ragioni per cui possono essere sbagliate. Prese singolarmente non ci sono grosse idee nuove nel libro, se non fosse per il modo innovativo che ha l'autore per mescolarle.

Libro molto interessante e scritto in modo chiaro e divertente soprattutto, ma con un'unica grande pecca: non si puó descrivere in ogni capitolo un animale strano per tanti motivi e non mettere neanche una foto o quanto meno un disegno. Io ho ovviato andando continuamente su google, ma se venisse eventualmente ristampato, e me lo auguro perché ne varrebbe la pena, spero proprio che gli vengano aggiunte le immagini.

This is a good and interesting book, well written and full of tips, my only disappointment is that I was expecting something to make my process of learning easier instead the book is mostly about making the learning process easier for other people. Of course it helps the trainer also but still... Anyway most of the suggestion involve neuroscience but at a level that it's easy to understand and to apply and so this can be a very good book to start if you are interested in the topic.

Questo é un buon manuale, ben scritto e pieno di suggerimenti, peccato che io mi aspettassi un libro che aiutasse me ad imparare piú facilmente, invece ha a che fare con la modalitá per rendere il processo di apprendimento altrui piú immediato. Naturalmente molti suggerimenti sono utili anche per il trainer, peró...Comunque la maggior parte delle facilitazioni prevede l'utilizzo delle neuroscienze, ma ad un livello pratico e facile da capire, quindi questo puó essere un buon libro se l'argomento vi interessa, ma non lo conoscete ancora abbastanza bene.

Fantastic book, totally hilarious and full of interesting facts and anecdotes scientifically explained with pictures and jokes. Probably the best way to get kids interested in science and adults too. Go straight to the paper version because with so many pictures it is better not to wait to much for every page to load.

Libro fantastico, assolutamente divertente e pieno di fatti ed aneddoti spiegati scientificamente attraverso disegni e battute spiritose. Probabilmente il miglior modo per interessare i bambini alla scienza, e forse anche gli adulti. Consiglio la versione cartacea del libro perché tutte le immagini rendono il libro in formato elettronico di difficile fruizione.

The history of heart surgery from the beginning of Medicine to nowadays was a really interesting reading, clear and fascinating, even if sometimes it was a little disturbing for me, but it is my fault, I cannot really see blood, or even think about surgery and things like that.

La storia della cardiochirugia dagli inizi della medicina al giorno d'oggi é stata davvero una lettura interessante, chiara e affascinante, anche se a volte mi faceva venire i brividi perché a me queste cose fanno impressione.
