This handbook is not really up-to-date, but it offers good insights and information, but mostly you already have to have written your book, it's all about finding a good editor, agent and a good publisher, but the book has to be already there.
Questo libro é abbastanza datato, ma offre dei buoni suggerimenti ed informazioni, ma il manoscritto deve giá essere pronto, perché qui ci sono spunti per trovare un buon editore, un agente ed una buona casa editrice, ma il libro deve essere giá stato scritto.

Very well written, some of the stories are poetical in some sort of way, dreamlike most of them. But I have to admit I didn't appreciate this sort of fantastic atmosphere that was in most of the tales, and also, I'm more a fan of Poe and King, when it comes to horror stories, than Lovercraft or Barker. So I cannot say I was disappointed because I knew what I was going to read, but I wouldn't recommend it to many people.
Storie che sono scritte benissimo, quasi poetiche e per la maggior parte oniriche. Ma devo anche ammettere che questa sorta di atmosfera fantastica che ne permea la maggior parte, non é tanto di mio gusto, anche perché se devo leggere storie "horror" mi piacciono di piú Poe e King che non Lovercraft o Barker. Quindi nonostante non sia delusa, perché sapevo a cosa andavo incontro, é anche vero che non consiglierei questo libro a molti.

Sad retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest, where Miranda and Caliban are in love but it's not what Prospero has in mind because he is a dark magician and he wants the son of the count of Milan to fall in love with Miranda thanks to one of his love potions. Miranda doesn't agree till the end, and when she does that, she has her own reasons. I was expecting better things from J.Carey.
Triste rilettura de "La tempesta" di Shakespeare, dove Miranda e Calibano sono innamorati, ma Prospero ha tutte altre intenzione, perché é uno stregone che progetta di usare la figlia per tornare sul trono da cui era stato esiliato.Prospero vuole usare una delle sue pozioni per fare sí che il principe reggente si innamori di Miranda, che peró non é d'accordo, peró acconsente perché ha le sue ragioni. Mi aspettavo qualcosa di meglio da J.Carey.

Ce BD raconte l'histoire de la traversée en solitaire de Clarisse qui, avec un courage inimaginable pour moi, décide d'essayer et réussit, avec tout ce que cela implique. Les dessins de Maud Benezit rendent très bien, à mon avis, les paratifs et aventures fiévreuses que vit l'héroïne. Une belle histoire qui pourrait aussi être un stimulant pour certains à faire face aux difficultés et aux peurs pour réaliser leurs désirs.
Questa graphic novel racconta la traversata in solitaria di Clarisse, che con un coraggio per me inimmaginabile, decide di provarci e ci riesce, con tutto quello che comporta. I disegni di Maud Benezit rendono molto bene, secondo me, i parativi febbrili e le avventure che vive la protagonista. Una bella storia che potrebbe essere anche di stimoli per alcuni ad affrontare difficoltá e paure per realizzare i propri desideri.

Questo é un libro molto piú serio di quanto il titolo potrebbe far supporre, specialmente se non si conosce l'autore, assurto poi alla gloria eterna con il nobel per l'economia e recentemente per il libro best seller Thinking Fast and slow. Non sono un'economista né ho mai studiato l'argomento, questo libro peró é chiarissimo e poi anche relativamente piú semplice per me perché parla delle "infiltrazioni" della psicologia nell'affinarsi delle teorie economiche, di microeconomia per essere precisi. È leggermente datato quindi magari potete anche leggere qualcosa di piú recente, ma per iniziare a masticare un pochino di neuroeconomia non é niente male, secondo me.

I had high expectations, but I would say I was rather disappointed by this story in which two people with a weighty past go from hating each other to a mostly unexplained insta-love. I didn't even get attached to the friends of Sera and probably the next protagonists, so I would say that this series, for me, ends here.
Avevo delle alte aspettative, ma direi che sono rimasta piuttosto delusa da questa storiellina in cui due persone con un pesante passato passano dall'odiarsi ad un insta-love per la maggior parte inspiegabile. Non mi sono nemmeno affezionata alle amiche di Sera e possibili prossime protagoniste, quindi direi che questa serie, per me finisce qui.

Review: Lessons

I have read several of McEwan's books, and in my opinion he is on a downward parabola. It's also to be said that I haven't read his early books, basically the ones in the last 10 years, and for me they have been getting worse. This last one then is written in such a long-winded and boring way that more than once I despaired of being able to finish it. Clearly I am not a literary scholar let alone a literary critic, but since I received the ARC for this book I can take it upon myself to say that I will not miss it and that maybe it may even be time for me to take a break from this author.
Ho letto parecchi libri di McEwan e secondo me é in una parabola discendente. C'é anche da dire che non ho letto i suoi libri iniziali, fondamentalmente quelli degli ultimi 10 anni e per me sono andati peggiorando. Quest'ultimo poi é scritto in modo talmente prolisso e noioso che piú di una volta ho disperato di riuscire a finirlo. Chiaramente io non sono una letterata e tantomeno un critica letteraria, ma siccome ho ricevuto l'ARC di questo libro posso prendermi la responsabilitá di dire che non mi mancherá e che magari sará anche arrivato il momento che io mi prenda una pausa da questo autore.

Some Anatomies of Melancholy by Robert Burton

There are no simple words to explain the parts of this super huge book that I read, but it's worthy, and now I'm going to download the complete 1400 pages and I will happily jump from one part to another as I used to do with the DSM-IVTR. No reason to buy the 5th as far as I'm concerned, as I have Burton now :)
Non ci sono parole semplici per spiegare gli estratti che ho letto dal gigantesco libro di Burton, ma ne valgono la pena, quindi ora mi "scenderó" il trattato completo saltando da una parte all'altra come facevo quando avevo tra le mani il DSM-IVTR. Lo so che é uscito il quinto, ma non ho ragione di commprarlo ora che ho il Burton ;)

This book is fast paced and I had problems to put it down and keep on living and I have no idea how they could make a movie out of it, as most of the action is inside the characters' heads, only disappointing thing is the end in my opinion. Not a thriller, not your regular novel but mostly a book worth reading.
Libro intenso e veloce che ho avuto problemi a smettere per continuare a vivere, inoltre mi lascia piuttosto stupita il fatto che abbiano potuto trarne un film, quando la maggior parte delle cose avviene nella testa dei personaggi. Purtroppo sono rimasta delusa, un pochino, dal finale; quindi riassumendo abbiamo un libro che non é il solito romanzo ma non é nemmeno il solito thriller, peró va comunque letto.

Review: Once Upon An Algorithm

It seems to me that in all this effort to write contemporary romances with STEM topics, we have lost sight of the fact that plot remains a fundamental point for any book that is not an essay or is not written by a Nobel laureate in literature. The second fundamental point then with regard to romance books is of course the drama that results from misunderstanding of any genre. In both cases, this book fails rather miserably in my opinion, because the plot is rather flimsy and the drama comes from an inexplicable decision made by both characters not to talk to each other, period. That said it goes without saying that I did not like the book and I do not think I will read any more by this author.
Mi sembra che in tutto questo sforzo per scrivere dei contemporary romance con degli argomenti STEM, si sia perso di vista il fatto che la trama resta un punto fondamentale per ogni libro che non sia un saggio o non sia scritto da un premio nobel per la letteratura. IL secondo punto fondamentale poi per quanto riguarda i libri d'amore é ovviamente il dramma che deriva da un fraintendimento di qualsiasi genere. In entrambi i casi questo libro fallisce piuttosto miseramente secondo me, perché la trama é piuttosto raffazzonata e il dramma deriva da una decisione inspiegabile presa da entrambi i personaggi di non parlarsi, punto. Detto questo viene da sé che il libro non mi é piaciuto e non credo ne leggeró altri di questa autrice.

This second book, as much as it could be considered a link between the first and the third which will be set in the realm of Faerie, is definitely a valid novel in itself that, personally, I enjoyed very much. First of all, the relationship between Wendell and Emily is enriched with nuance and detail, moreover, the secondary characters are up to the main ones, and the adventures in which all the players incur are well written and hard to stop reading. So I would say a success on all fronts.
Questo secondo libro, per quanto potrebbe essere considerato un collegamento tra il primo ed il terzo che sará ambientato nel regno di Faerie, é sicuramente un valido romanzo in se stesso che, personalmente, mi é piaciuto molto. Inanzitutto il rapporto tra Wendell ed Emily si arricchisce di sfumature e particolari, inoltre i personaggi secondari sono all'altezza di quelli principali e le avventure in cui incorrono tutti i protagonisti sono ben scritte e difficili da smettere di leggere. Direi quindi un successo su tutti i fronti.

Long excursus trough the philosophy of science and the precursor of Neuroeconomics, such as Neurobiology for example. There is also the first explanation of Nash's game theory that I maybe understood, that is to say that the book is very well written, but sometimes can be a little bit boring.
Lungo viaggio attraverso la filosofia della scienza ed i precursori della Neuroeconomia, come per esempio la neurobiologia. Inoltre in questo libro c'é anche la prima spiegazione della teoria dei giochi di Nash che forse ho capito, tanto per dire quanto possa essere ben scritto il libro, che peró potrebbe anche risultare un po' noioso.

A Motor-Flight through France by Edith Wharton

I found this delicious volume hidden away in a bookstore and I was in awe because of the fonts, the pages and most of all the pictures. A wonderful travel trough france where the words of the author, even if ripetitive I have to say, shows you a world that's not there anymore.
Ho trovato questo delizioso volume nascosto in una libreria e me ne sono innamorata subito per tanti motivi: il carattere utilizzato, la spaziatura, i margini e soprattutto le foto. Un fantastico viaggio attraverso una Francia che non c'é piú accompagnati dalle parole di una grande autrice, vale proprio la pena.

Different essays, some of which were extremely complex for me to understand. Some others were easier and usual involved more philosophy than algorithms. This book is also almost 10 years old, so if you need the state of the art of Neurophilosophy, it may be better to look for some other book.
Differenti saggi, alcuni dei quali troppo complessi per me. Altri invece erano di piú facile comprensione e di solito avevano a che fare piú con la filosofia che con gli algoritmi. Inoltre questo libro ha quasi 10 anni quindi magari se vi serve una situazione dello stato dell'arte, magari é meglio cercare qualcosa di piú aggiornato.

I'm not sure I fully understood what the author means by "degrowth communism," but he certainly pleaded his case in an extremely articulate way, so much so that by the end of this book I wasn't sure whether to set out to write a review or commit suicide directly....
Non sono sicura di aver ben capito cosa intenda l'autore per "comunismo di decrescita", ma sicuramente ha perorato la sua causa in modo estremamente articolato, tanto che alla fine di questo libro non ero sicura se mettermi a scrivere una recensione o suicidarmi direttamente....

Years ago I had read a book called "The highly sensitive person," and since then I've been wondering if perhaps, after so many years (it's a 1996 book) we can talk about people on the autism spectrum, partly because the symptoms seem to me to be quite similar in some ways. There is also the possibility that we finally delve into the "autistic but extroverted" person as well, which seems an almost impossible condition, but I would say quite present, based on my experience as a psychologist also.
Anyway, this book is well written, provides self-diagnosis tools and several "survival" strategies as it were. I just wouldn't sell it as new idea.
Anni fa avevo letto un libro che si chiamava "The highly sensitive person" ed é da allora che mi chiedo se forse, dopo tanti anni (é un libro del 1996) si possa parlare di persone sullo spettro autistico, anche perché i sintomi mi sembrano parecchio simili per certi versi. C'é anche la possibilitá che si approfondisca finalmente anche la persona "autistica ma estroversa" che sembra una condizione quasi impossibile, ma direi piuttosto presente, basandomi sulla mia esperienza di psicologa.
Comunque questo libro é scritto bene, fornisce strumenti di autodiagnosi e parecchie strategie "di sopravvivenza" come dire. Solo che non lo venderei come una novitá.

Some of the things written here (mostly the experiments on the animals) were already known to me, but together with experiments of humans show a very scary picture all together, still very interesting anyway.
Alcune delle cose scritte qui le avevo giá studiate (fondamentalmente tutti gli esperimenti sugli animali) ma sommate a quelle sugli umani danno un quadro d'insieme abbastanza preoccupante, che resta comunque molto interessante.

This graphic novel is really well done, but I was a little bit disappointed in the plot and the dialogues. This doesn't mean that I'm looking forward to read the second installment in this series as I have a big love for steampunk whatever the form it takes.
Questa graphic novel é disegnata benissimo, anche se i dialoghi e la trama in generale non sono proprio il massimo. Questo non significa che io non leggeró il secondo volume, anzi, considerato il mio amore per tutto ció che é steampunk.

I like the stories in this series, but I had grown fond of Millie and honestly expected a little more from her book, and Scott had never interested me that much. Other than that, the story holds more than one surprise twist so the murder mystery is not bad at all.
A me le storie di questa serie piacciono, ma a Millie mi ero affezionata e sinceramente mi aspettavo qualcosina di piú dal suo libro e Scott non mi era mai interessato tanto. A parte questo, la storia riserva piú di un colpo di sorpresa quindi il giallo non é niente male.
