My Berlin Kitchen: A Love Story (with Recipes) by Luisa Weiss

My Berlin Kitchen: A Love Story (with Recipes)My Berlin Kitchen: A Love Story by Luisa Weiss
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While I was reading this book I stopped for a couple of weeks because I didn't agree on one of the biggest decision of Luisa, thank God I kept on reading and in the end I was right :) This story resonated a lot with somebody like me who is not at home anywhere.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wanted so much to read this book that maybe this is the reason why I'm a little bit disappointed. It's exactly what I thought it was going to be, plus a lot more, and eventually all this plus valence of details and information that made it boring for me. Or maybe it is just the fact that I'm not American so the topic was interesting to me till a point, I can't imagine foreign people being over interested in all the struggles of a girl who comes from a poor family from Neaples, or wait, that was Elena Ferrante ;)

Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman

Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic RootsUnorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As far as the topic goes, it was an interesting reading, but in a way I just didn't need another remainder about the uselessness and the dangers of religion, every religion, and the stronger the impositions the bigger are the damages. I'm happy that she saved herself and her little kid from all that hypocrisy.

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Lab Girl

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A memoir that is sometimes a science book and sometimes a psychological essay. If you ask me, the book is a little bit too long, but it was enjoyable.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My Two Italies by Joseph Luzzi

My Two ItaliesMy Two Italies by Joseph Luzzi
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

As an Italian I try to understand why Prof. Luzzi stressed to much the poverty or "La miseria" of Calabria, maybe his target was to induce compassion in his reader, or maybe he wanted to show how far was he gone in his life starting very low. But italy is something else also, even if superficiality will get you only the "postcard" version.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I've been longing to read this book since a couple of years, after I read something else written by this beautiful writer, I think it was poetry. This book, in its infinite sadness, is a real good one, well written and dramatically honest, made me feel ashamed of being white. I won't be brave enough to read all the other volume of her autobiography, but I'm delighted that she became so famous and well known.

Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny by Nile Rodgers

Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and DestinyLe Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny by Nile Rodgers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a crazy full life Nile have, he is still alive so it seemed bad to me to write "Had", but seriously he met probably every famous american musician from the '60 on, and mostly he produced the biggest disco era success, not to forget Madonna, Diana Ross or Christina Aguilera. Uau, I arrived by chance to this book and I was so taken by the stories of his life that I will recommend this book to every music lover I know.

Dolce e divertente.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

On the Move: Mein Leben by Oliver Sacks, Hainer Kober (Translator)

On the Move: Mein Leben

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Je voulais juste vivre by Yeonmi Park

Je voulais juste vivreJe voulais juste vivre by Yeonmi Park
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Gratitude by Oliver Sacks

GratitudeGratitude by Oliver Sacks
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After reading this short book all I ever can think about is if I will have the same thoughts, or the time to have the same thoughts, when I will be old. Will I be ready to die? He wasn't anyway, but still with all his grace, the same we got to know trough his books, he was still happy for all he had had.
Farewell Oliver, you were a great man and you will be remembered.

My Guru And His Disciple by Christopher Isherwood

My Guru And His Disciple

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This is probably one of the books on which I fell asleep more often since I started. I´m still unsure whether to attribute the responsibility of my drowsiness to Isherwood or to the topic (even if I really wanted to read this book), but I think 50/50.

Discontent and its Civilisations by Mohsin Hamid

Discontent and its Civilisations

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love this guy, he could be one of the reason why writers could help this world not to implode with wars, racism, religious issues and so on. His essays are so easy to read but at the same time so deep, that even things not so important could help you think about the difference between people and population.

The Art of Asking: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help by Amanda Palmer

The Art of Asking: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had a vague idea who Amanda Palmer is, but I did not follow either her blog or her twitter, even after discovering that she was married to Neil Gaiman, I mean, in itself is already a resounding success, at least from my point of view ;)
Now that I seem to know her, because this book about the art of asking is nothing more than an autobiography, I started to follow both her blog and her twitter account, this is probably one of the things I always do every once I find an interesting person, I'm a groupie inside.
The book is pretty funny, even if I would have cut another fifty pages, but this is my personal opinion, basically is not too long, maybe just a little bit repetitive, as some things are absolutely fascinating for someone like me who has in common with her only a certain love for music.
However, the problem with the request that the author addresses in the text, I think it's one of those things that unites us all, for better or for worse, and her way to deal with it, opening maybe even too much to more critics due to the troll and malice which the web is full, it seemed to me very brave, but in my case difficult to duplicate. So I conclude by wishing her good luck and I hope above all that Anthony heals.

THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND GRAND CENTRAL PUBLISHING FOR THE PREVIEW!
