The City Always Wins by Omar Robert Hamilton

The City Always WinsThe City Always Wins by Omar Robert Hamilton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is written in a complicated and fragmented way, but I think this is done on purpose by the author because what happened in Egypt, or what we hink happened in Egypt in 2011, or the author point of view of what happened in Cairo since October 2011, is fragmented, not clear, confused but mostly it didn't work. A very sad view on a revolution that hadn't the results, or maybe it had, that most of the young people living in Cairo desired, the same the died, mostly and sadly.

The Holocaust: A New History by Laurence Rees

The Holocaust: A New HistoryThe Holocaust: A New History by Laurence Rees
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is an historical book that switch from time to time from the chronological order of situations to include the ethical and moral stance of people interviewed on the events that were taking places. It took me ages to read it all, mostly because from the ~middle on, stories were really hard for me to read. The infinite sadness.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An hidden historical fact that connects the Jews and the Japanese, and the plan to save as many as they could from Hitler's Germany. I had no idea this thing happened and the authors made a good job, trough the words of many, of recollecting and tell the tale.

The Holy Roman Empire: A Thousand Years of Europe's History by Peter H. Wilson

The Holy Roman Empire: A Thousand Years of Europe's HistoryThe Holy Roman Empire: A Thousand Years of Europe's History by Peter H. Wilson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It has been interesting, and sometimes boring, but I have to say that I learned a lot, even if this way of writing about history handling each main topic and not in chronological order didn't work this time for me. When I read SPQR it was easier because I already knew a lot of the story so the scaffolding was there, but this time it was not enough and from times to times information disappeared really fast.

SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard

SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this book a lot, it was well written, interesting and as I have lived in Rome for almost 20 years for me it was some type of Epiphany. I liked the way the author decides to "tell the tale" and not strictly following the chronological order, that could have result in a boring lessons. From time to time I got the feeling that I could fell the history devolving in front of me, and it was brilliant.

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth CenturyOn Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If this book didn't compared Hitler to Trump every single time, it would have been much more believable. The point is that I don't like trump myself, but this doesn't mean that to sell more books you have to made the problem bigger as it already is, because, as the author said, if the tyranny is already in power it's too late. But if he got to publish this book and sell many copies of it then tyranny is not already in power. So which one of the 2? It's ok to read book that reflect our own point of view, but it's even more important to be critical because otherwise where is the difference between two different types of Zelots?

The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan

The Silk Roads: A New History of the World

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It took me a lot to read it, one chapter a day sometimes, but it was worthy. The chronological history of the world from another point of view: not only the silk roads, but the wheat roads, the oil roads and so on. Brilliant.

Ben fatto.

Roads to Berlin by Cees Nooteboom, Laura Watkinson (Translator)

Roads to Berlin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Berlin just after the wall was built, Berlin during the cold war with the wall between east block and west block and Berlin after the Mauerfall (as the German calls it). Super cool book, mostly because I live here and I know what he is talking about.

Libro figo, soprattutto perché vivo qui e so di cosa parla l'autore.

Not bad, the history of the world from an anthropological and evolutionary psychology point of view; problem is, I've just read Sapiens, that was written in a better way and more interesting, but this is just my opinion.

Interesting and well written and not even boring in the historical parts! I liked this book a lot, I'm just sorry that I read it till the end when we were already back from Amsterdam, I would have loved to see many more places now that I knew their story!

Interessante e ben scritto e neanche troppo noioso nelle parti di storia! Questo libro mi é piaciuto parecchio, mi é dispiaciuto solo che l'ho finito quando ormai eravamo giá andati via da Amsterdam, perché avrei voluto vedere tante altre cose dopo averlo letto!

A Small Person Far Away (Out of the Hitler Time, #3) by Judith Kerr

A Small Person Far Away (Out of the Hitler Time, #3)A Small Person Far Away by Judith Kerr
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Probably the saddest of the three even if there's no war to be afraid of. The sad reunion between a mother and her children, the pain of being alive, the difficult of starting all over again. I would have loved to know the end, but in a way it was better Kerr's end.

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (Out of the Hitler Time, #1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was so worried that they couldn't get to a safe place that I was worried all the time, but in the end it was a good enough book and I will keep on reading the other 2 stories to see the end.

Such a great book! I had no idea that the anti slavery movement in U.S. was mixed with the beginning of the feminist movement, and there are also many things more I learned about that period. I liked the characters and knowing there were based on real people made the book better for me.

Bel libro davvero!

I read the Italian version of this book, that tells the universal indifference of a whole planet towards a genocide. Nothing can me more actual than that.
