Fresh Complaint by Jeffrey Eugenides
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
As usual my first point is that I don't like short stories so much, but as Eugenides is one of my favorite author I was going to read them anyway. Some are really very good, bittersweet, and some totally bitter, but in each of them there is something that make you remember that as if it was a book in itself and not some pages in a collection, I guess this is the reason why he is such a good author.
Non mi piacciono le storie, preferisco di gran lunga i romanzi, ma siccome questo é Eugenides, andava letto comunque. Molte storie sono agrodolci, altre semplicemente amare, ma é facile ricordare ognuna a se stante e non come parte di una collezione, perché hanno un forte impatto. Immagino questa sia la ragione per la quale l'autore é considerato un grande.

Anche se me l'hanno letta pure stavolta (grazie Radio3), questa novella é pesantissima, non tanto per il linguaggio ricercato e un po' vecchiotto della traduzione scelta, quanto per la storia che in confronto Ivan I'lic é di un'allegria trascinante. Un impiegato di mezza etá, un cappotto, un furto, tutto racchiuso in queste parole c'é uno dei racconti piú agghiaccianti che mente umana possa concepire, una specie di Fantozzi ante litteram, che poi a me non mi ha mai mai mai fatto ridere. La miseria umana in tutte le sue peggiori sfaccettature.

I read only the first story, the one that gave the title to the book, but I was not interested in reading all the book, as short horror stories go, these were not my favorites.
Ho letto solo la prima storia, quella che da il titolo al libro, ma non mi interessava leggere le altre perché lo stile di Chambers non é di mio gradimento.

Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances by Neil Gaiman

The last collection of short stories came to an end and I must admit I didn't like them so much as the previous. The only exception are "The sleeper and the spindle" and the Shadow's story, but that one I already read. Let's wait for something new even if this year we already got a collection of essays and a book about Norwegian Mythology.
Anche questa collezione di racconti é arrivata alla fine, ma devo dire che con un paio di eccezioni non é stata bella come le altre. Ora mi tocca aspettare per qualcosa di nuovo ma credo per quest'anno, dopo una raccolta di saggi ed un romanzo sulla mitologia nordica mi dovrò mettere ad aspettare per un po'....

Altre storie nella mia abbuffata di "tutto quello che ha scritto Gaiman fino ad ora". Credo di aver sviluppato una sorta di dipendenza, ma non me ne preoccupo perché ho ancora da leggere altri due libri di storie e un romanzo :)

Ci sono delle storielline veramente carine, e io di solito nemmeno li leggo i racconti, a meno che non siano di S.King. La mia abbuffata di Gaiman mi sta dando grosse soddisfazioni recentemente.....

Englander goes back to short stories and some of them are even funny, which is something new for this author as far as I know. This time also everything has to do with Hebraism as well, and my only problem is that there were many words (maybe yiddish) that I couldn't understand and there were no explanations in the book, that was upsetting. Anyway a very good book, specially for somebody who likes short stories, I usually don't but these were worthy.
Englander dopo il romanzo, torna a scrivere racconti, alcuni dei quali addirittura divertenti, che sicuramente, considerato quanto aveva scritto fino ad ora, é una novitá assoluta. Anche stavolta tutte le storie ruotano attorno all'ebraismo e il mio unico problema con questo libro é stato che piú volte c'erano parole che non conoscevo, probabilmente yiddish, che non venivano spiegate....mah, scelte editoriali forse, comunque era piuttosto frequente e quindi noioso. Per concludere un buon libro, specialmente per gli amanti dei racconti, come io non sono, ma mi é piaciuto lo stesso.

Storie centrate su persone di religione ebraica: alcune piú lunghe altre brevi, tra cui le migliori, tra cui quella che da il titolo alla raccolta. Mi aspettavo qualcosa di meglio, soprattutto pensavo che sulla scia di Roth o di Auslander mi avrebbero fatto ridere. Assolutamente no.

Very good short stories about the east, the west and all the people in the middle. Just to show that even if the context are different, people are all the same.
Brevi storie sull'est, sull'ovest e tutte le persone che si trovano in mezzo. Il modo giusto per mostrare che, anche se il contesto é differente, le persone sono sempre le stesse.

As usual I found, on the long distance, short stories boring, especially if they are summed up on a very big book. Some of these stories are really good, but my overall opinion in the end was of a book that I wouldn't have read if it wasn't for a reading group.
Come al solito, sulla lunga distanza i racconti mi annoiano, specialmente se sono racconti in un libro di quasi 500 pagine. Alcune di queste storie non sono male, anzi un paio sono proprio belle, ma il mio giudizio complessivo resta quello di un libro mediocre, che non avrei finito se non avessi dovuto discuterlo in un gruppo di lettura.
