Come anche il libro su Chernobyl, ho impiegato parecchio tempo per finire questo volume di interviste a persone comuni che sono vissute attraverso il passaggio dall'Unione Sovietica all'attuale confederazione. La maggior parte delle conversazioni riportate mostra come, almeno il 90% della popolazione non ha tratto, e duole dirlo, nessun tipo di beneficio dalla caduta del comunismo, se non una maggior libertá di parola, sempre a patto che non vivano in Cecenia, Bielorussia o Nagorno Karabakh, chiaramente. Quindi che conclusioni trarre, non lo so, leggetelo e fate le vostre considerazioni.

È stato per me impossibile leggere questo libro tutto di seguito, il dolore e lo sgomento erano veramente troppo forti. Un popolo devastato da radiazioni e bugie quello che viveva intorno a Chernobyl, i pochi che avanzano tirano avanti con medaglie in ricordo dei loro morti e lo strazio per i loro bambini mai nati o non sopravvissuti. Una serie di storie che lasciano il segno e che ci fanno sperare che non succeda mai piú, eppure é risuccesso, da poco, a Fukujima, e anche lí tutti a dire che non c'é problema, é tutto sotto controllo, stanno tutti bene, anzi, magari non tutti, ma sicuramente la maggior parte....

It was interesting, even if some things I already read in Negroponte and other in Maslow and some in other psychological stuff, still it was really good wrapped up and gives you a clear view of the situation so far.

Molto interessante, anche se alcune cose le avevo giá lette nei libri di Negroponte, altre in quelli di Maslow e di altri psicologi, resta comunque il fatto che é stato un ottimo riassunto che da una chiara visione della situazione in questo momento.

So funny specially because is full of stereotypes and soooo politically incorrect! I think that if you are not German but you have to live here, you will probably love this book, or at last so it was for me. There is a little bit of comfort in number.

Divertentissimo, specialmente perché é la sagra dello stereotipo ed é totalmente politicamente scorretto. Se sei uno straniero, ma devi vivere in Germania é possibile che questo libro ti piaccia tanto, o almeno cosí é stato per m, c'é del conforto nei numeri e sapere che siamo in tanti a pensare che ci sia qualcosa di fondamentalmente strano in questo popolo é confortante.

Anche questo saggio é stato molto interessante anche se non sempre di facile lettura. Le cose che piú mi hanno colpito sono le digressioni sulla musica contemporanea, il fatto che Berio ed Eco fossero amici e che Cage é andato da Mike Bongiorno. Oltre a queste idiozie, la teoria dell'informazione e il saggio sullo Zen e l'Occidente sono illuminanti e ben spiegate.

Interesting essay about power, about how you can define, calculate and measure any increase and decrease of it. Now power is in decline, says the author, and through a "brief history" of power, shows how current places of so-called "power" no longer have the same "power" of the past. There are several plausible explanations for this then, including the increase of the world population, the culture medium and the ease with which information travels over the network. I thought it was going to be a boring book, instead it was pretty easy and fast to read.

Interessante saggio sul potere, su come lo si possa definire, calcolare e misurarne eventualmente crescita e decrescita. Proprio di una sua diminuzione parla l'autore e, attraverso una "breve storia" del potere, illustra come attualmente i posti cosidetti di "potere" non hanno piú la stessa "potenza" di un tempo. CI sono per questo poi varie spiegazioni plausibili, tra cui l'aumento della popolazione mondiale, della cultura media e della facilitá con cui le informazioni viaggiano sulla rete. Pensavo sarebbe stato un libro noioso, invece si é rivelato facile e veloce da leggere.

I love this guy, he could be one of the reason why writers could help this world not to implode with wars, racism, religious issues and so on. His essays are so easy to read but at the same time so deep, that even things not so important could help you think about the difference between people and population.

Io lo adoro Mohsin Hamid, lui, assieme ad altri scrittori, potrebbero aiutare il mondo a non implodere sotto il peso di gueere, razzismi vari e problemi di origine religiosa, tanto per dirne alcuni. I suoi saggi sono cosí facili da leggere, ma allo stesso tempo cosí profondi da sottolineare attraverso le descrizioni di cose semplici le grandi differenze che ci sono tra le persone e le popolazioni.

Interessante, ma "Il tao della fisica" era migliore.

Book fascinating, very interesting and well-written concerning the happiness, all the studies from psychology and neuroscience that have made it a major topic and the way in which it is used, economically speaking. The weight of research on well-being in the society in which we live and happiness in strictly economic terms is something fundamental, but we often ignore it.

Libro affascinante, molto interessante e ben scritto riguardante la felicitá, tutti gli studi che a partire dalla psicologia e le neuroscienze ne hanno fatto un argomento dibattuto e il mondo in cui viene usata economicamente parlando. Il peso delle ricerche riguardanti il benessere nella societá in cui viviamo e la felicitá in termini strettamente economici sono qualcosa di fondamentale, ma che spesso ignoriamo.

Very interesting book that recounts the birth and development of "synthetic drugs" and how through the DarkNet selling has become not only rich in terms of profits, even extremely easy and almost risk-free. Really worrying.

Libro molto interessante che racconta la nascita e lo sviluppo delle "droghe sintetiche" e di come attraverso la DarkNet il loro smercio sia diventato, oltre che ricco in termini di profitti, anche estremamente facile e quasi privo di rischi. Veramente preoccupante.

As the topic is complex, and completely outside of my knowledge, the author is able to explain quite well what the problem is with respect to the creation of new forms of pesticides and how this "race to the slaughter" is definitely not very useful in the long run, while also providing useful suggestions to change things and hope for a better future.

Per quanto l'argomento sia complesso, e totalmente al di fuori della mia conoscenza, l'autore é riuscito a spiegare piuttosto bene quale sia il problema rispetto alla creazione di sempre nuove forme di pesticidi e di come questa "corsa al massacro" sia decisamente poco utile sulla lunga distanza, fornendo inoltre utili suggerimenti per cambiare le cose e sperare in un futuro migliore.

Apart from the siren server, which had in any case already widely talked about, I do not think that the author introduces big news compared to the previous book. In addition, his prose seems to me decidedly more confusing and convoluted, full of dramatic scenarios but devoid of any constructive proposal to resolve or at least minimize the damage.

A parte i siren server, di cui aveva comunque largamente giá parlato, non mi sembra che l'autore introduca grosse novitá rispetto al libro precedente. Inoltre la sua prosa mi sembra decisamente piú confusa e circonvoluta, piena di scenari drammatici ma priva di qualunque proposta costruttiva per risolvere o almeno contenere i danni.

I was expecting something similar to Foer's book, but this one starts from a completely different premise, and that is agriculture, in order to emphasize how the current intensive cultivation of corn, which is then used in virtually all fields, is making the world a place with fewer and fewer resources. At this point, the fact that becoming a vegetarian because the animals only eat so much corn is only a corollary.

Mi aspettavo qualcosa di simile al libro di Foer, ma questo parte da tutto un altro presupposto, e cioé l'agricoltura, per sottolineare come l'attuale coltivazione intensiva di granoturco, che viene poi usato praticamente in tutti i campi, sta rendendo il mondo un posto con sempre meno risorse. A questo punto il fatto che diventare vegetariani perché tanto le bestie mangiano solo granturco é solo un corollario.

Although this book is, at times, a little scary, it is also true that the author tends to repeat himself, and sometimes assumes the omniscient and paternalistic attitudes that I didn't really appreciate. In part this essay was pretty interesting though several of his conclusions differ from mine, but it is still true that he is the guru of the media between the two of us. The statement on cephalopods, however, is alone worth the whole book.

Anche se questo libro mette, a volte, un po' di paura, é anche vero che l'autore tende a ripetersi ed a volte assume degli atteggiamenti paternalistici ed onniscenti che non sono stati di mio gradimento. A parte questo é stato piuttosto interessante anche se parecchie delle sue conclusioni divergono dalle mie, ma é pur sempre vero che é lui il guru dei media tra noi due. L'affermazione sui cefalopodi comunque, vale da solo tutto il libro.

I liked this book, but I really struggled to finish it, it is very dense, full of characters and stories, but certainly interesting, too bad for those 150 pages,at least, that were too much in my opinion. Ifemelu's blog contains insights crazy for someone like me, who does not even have a black friend (not by choice) and certainly this novel is a kind of incredible breakthrough into the lives of African-American people, but to return to the characters, I find a little difficult to understand what Ifemelu found then in Obinze, whom already was not so interesting when he was young and aging is even worse.

Il libro mi é piaciuto, ma ho veramente fatto fatica a finirlo, é molto denso, pieno di personaggi e di storie, ma indubbiamente interessante, peccato per quelle 150 pagine di troppo, almeno. Il blog di Ifemelu contiene degli insight pazzeschi per chi, come me, senza volerlo, non ha nemmeno un amico di colore e sicuramente questo romanzo é una specie di incredibile spaccato sulla vita delle persone di colore, ma per tornare ai personaggi, mi risulta un po' difficile comprendere che cosa ci trovasse poi Ifemelu in Obinze, che giá non era un granché da giovane, ma invecchiando é anche peggiorato.
