Elon Musk: Inventing the Future by Ashlee Vance

Elon Musk: Inventing the Future

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

So, the author keep on telling us that E.M. is on a quest, and it seems that this quest allows him to do almost whatever he wants, both with things and with people. At the beginning I thought that this was going to be an hagiographic book, like the one I read about Steve Jobs, but this is something different, maybe because Elon Musk is still alive. Interesting but I have my reserve.

For All the Tea in China: Espionage, Empire and the Secret Formula for the World's Favourite Drink by Sarah Rose

For All the Tea in China: Espionage, Empire and the Secret Formula for the World's Favourite DrinkFor All the Tea in China: Espionage, Empire and the Secret Formula for the World's Favourite Drink by Sarah Rose
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Told as a story of espionage and adventure, this is the biography of Robert Fortune, the Scottish gardner that succeeded in smuggling tea leaves from China to Himalaya, helping the English Empire not to fight the opium wars anymore. Some things told by the author left me a bit doubtful but as he said this is not a scientific essay so.....

Do the KIND Thing: Think Boundlessly, Work Purposefully, Live Passionately by Daniel Lubetzky

Do the KIND Thing: Think Boundlessly, Work Purposefully, Live Passionately

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have to admit I was completely disappointed by this book, but the fault is mine because I read only the title and subtitle so it was my fault when I realized that, instead of kindness, the topic was about raising a small business, from the start up to Forbes. Which, as a matter of fact, is not something I'm interested so much. So be careful when you buy this book to read also the cover.

Stefan Zweig: "Montaigne" (Biographie) by Stefan Zweig, Lara Sonntag (Editor)

Stefan Zweig:

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I like the way Zweig has to show and write about famous people as they were "normal" and I also like Montaigne, whom I didn't know so much about. I specially liked his idea of being as true to himself as he could, even if that made him, most of the time, a selfish man.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Georgie and Elsa: Jorge Luis Borges and His Wife: The Untold StoryGeorgie and Elsa: Jorge Luis Borges and His Wife: The Untold Story by Norman Di Giovanni
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well, as a poet and writer certainly was a great man but as "political" and "husband" Borges really comes short of expectations, not that Elsa as "wife" and especially as a woman was then so much better. This book even if destroyed one of my "myth", was useful to remind me that to be a great writer, it is not necessary to be a great man.

Memoirs of an Exorcist: My Life Fighting SatanMemoirs of an Exorcist: My Life Fighting Satan by Marco Tosatti
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

In several places this book really scared me. Many of the things described, regardless of the fact that one may believe that they are caused by the devil or not, are really frightening, even if they were only psychopathology of various kinds. This is the first and the last time that I read such a book based on facts which are presumed to be real.

Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood ReadingBookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading by Lucy Mangan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The life of a child entangled with the books she read, unluckily as I'm Italian, not all the titles were known or famous for me, still and enjoyable reading.

The Existentialist's Survival Guide: How to Live Authentically in an Inauthentic AgeThe Existentialist's Survival Guide: How to Live Authentically in an Inauthentic Age by Gordon Marino
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Whoever studied philosophy can imagine how depressive a book about existentialism could be, but now this one, in the end I think I enjoyed this book thoroughly because it was funny in a bitter sweet sort of way, but I haven't appreciate the fact that there is no epilogue in the ARC!!!

The Instinct for Cooperation: A Graphic Novel Conversation With Noam ChomskyThe Instinct for Cooperation: A Graphic Novel Conversation With Noam Chomsky by Jeffrey Wilson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a long time Chomsky reader, I have to admit that putting images in one of his interview made everything absolutely clear and could be a direct line to understand the way he reasons.

The Beat Interviews by John Tytell

The Beat InterviewsThe Beat Interviews by John Tytell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Most of these interviews revolves around Kerouac, who was not interviewed, and Burroughs, who is between those of the Beat Generation, one of the authors I like less. Some of the people interviewed, probably due to the continuous and persistent drug abuse, does not seem to be very clear in explaining the answers, others are not clear at all. The beat generation was interesting for me because I've read a few books and I did not like them, so I was hoping that by deepening the background a lot of things would become more clear. It did not work, but at least I tried.

Romantic Moderns: English Writers, Artists and the Imagination from Virginia Woolf to John Piper by Alexandra Harris

Romantic Moderns: English Writers, Artists and the Imagination from Virginia Woolf to John Piper

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was really an interesting essay, which offers a vision of the years ranging from 1939 to 1940 through the figures of various artists, from writers to painters through architects and their works, reinterpreted in from a modernist/romantic point of view.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My Brief History by Stephen Hawking

My Brief HistoryMy Brief History by Stephen Hawking
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Short and concise this book dwells for most of the time on the findings of Hawking istead of his life, it seems to me also consistent with the character who does not want or need to impress with feelings, it is not its purpose nor his work, let alone something for which he is famous. Having said that you can also not read it unless you're particularly interested in the reason why if there were time travelers among us, they would be very small.

Beethoven: The Man RevealedBeethoven: The Man Revealed by John Suchet
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was expecting something different, with a more careful eye to the musical life of this composer, but this book, however well documented, offers only the vision on the biography of the author, and appointing the works gradually. Clear that it is also useful to know what was going on at that time to the musician to get an idea of the whole situation, but I would have preferred less soap opera and more music.

My Life in Middlemarch by Rebecca Mead

My Life in MiddlemarchMy Life in Middlemarch by Rebecca Mead
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The parallel lives of the characters in Middlemarch, of their author George Eliot and the writer of this well written and interesting essay. I did not know much about George Eliot, except that she was a woman, I'm sure now that his life has been, in a way, like a novel, especially for an author who chose to live together as husband and wife at the time of Queen Victoria . Among other things, relive several of the steps in Middlemarch reminded me how much I liked the time, now I also want to read her other works that I still haven´t.

The Trip to Echo Spring by Olivia Laing

The Trip to Echo SpringThe Trip to Echo Spring by Olivia Laing
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The history of alcohol dependence, as well as friendship in almost all cases, intertwines the lives of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Williams, Cheever, Berryman and Carver. The author takes advantage of a journey that has carried out in several places as told by these authors, to describe those places who have been part of their lives mostly in an alchoolic state. Several passages are taken from books, others from letters they sent to each other or to friends and relatives. It is natural to wonder how much their skill is attributable to the presence or absence of alcohol, but it is clear that no one can answer this question.

William Gibson by Gary Westfahl

William Gibson

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was expecting a life a little "more lively", but Gibson's is not so exciting as one might expect from the inventor of cyberspace, at least the one in novels. Interesting, however, for the lovers of his novels, because it provides some background information and then there are other works by the author as the scripts, reviews and articles. A collection almost boundless.

This book is very interesting, well-written and full of curious informetion and provids a quick rundown on the life of the most famous writers and poets of the past 500 years, just do not be mislead by the title because it is the only thing "stupid " in the whole book, but I guess they chosed it to sell.

Gore Vidal: A Biography by Fred Kaplan

Gore Vidal: A Biography

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well-written book and definitely very interesting as the life of Gore Vidal is wonderfully full of people who have left or leave a mark on the world. In addition, the writer has been able to capture several facets of both the political scientist and the writer; for me also has been very interesting the historical event that this book allowed me to discover as there were many things that I did not know about the history of the fifties, sixties and seventies especially regarding the United States of America.
