A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

A Tale for the Time BeingA Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not an easy reading, full of informations and the story was also sad, but it was very compelling, in a way made of a dreamlike substance and fascinating. Remarkable, except for the ending, that I didn't like.

A Distant Shore by Caryl Phillips

A Distant Shore

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Such a sad sad sad book that I still don't know if I'm happy because it was well written and deep or just because it's finished and I'm going to binge read some rubbish to recover. Anyway it's a good novel if you are one of those person who think that sadness has to be always involved in a serious story. You will find plenty here.

The Good Doctor by Damon Galgut

The Good DoctorThe Good Doctor by Damon Galgut
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I wonder what this book was all about....friendship? love? loneliness? Africa? It was a real difficult reading, I drag on and on and even if it is very short, it seemed to me endless. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody, except to somebody I don't like.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Traversee de la Mangrove by Maryse Condé

Traversee de la Mangrove (Folio)

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Das Seil by Stefan aus dem Siepen

Das Seil

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Alice by Judith Hermann

Alice

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Certainly it is not easy to write five stories with the same protagonist and her relationship with death. But believe me it is not even easy to read. Alice is in contact with the death of a former boyfriend, the Uncle's and other three deaths, the last of which brings the stories to a possible hypothetical closure. The landscape of the five stories in some way is the only other recurring character in these novellas, and I must admit that it is also one of the main reasons why I finished the book. The way that the author has to speak of a garden, a street or a beach, reminded me the ephemeral world of Banana Yoshimoto, whom not surprisingly, is one of my favorite authors.

Soharas Reise by Barbara Honigmann

Soharas Reise

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Funny as dramatic, fortunately written in a German easy to understand, so I go the ending.

No One Sleeps in Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid

No One Sleeps in AlexandriaNo One Sleeps in Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a very special book, there are pieces of the history of World War II, passages from the Koran and dreams of the main character, a devout and practicing Muslim who must move to live in Alexandria just before the Second World War. During his research work he meets Dymian which is a Coptic Christian and despite religious differences the two become close friends and share a part of their life for a couple of years. Meanwhile, the world is done with the German domination and the war ends. Nice told though sometimes a bit slow, full of secondary characters and discussions on mysticism and religions. Charming, but Meguid is not my favorite Egyptian writer.

Eine Liebe aus Nichts. by Barbara Honigmann

Eine Liebe aus Nichts.Eine Liebe aus Nichts. by Barbara Honigmann
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It is not a bad book, but it is not even a good book. A woman tells her parents life als rootless expatriate Jews falling in Germany (one English and one Bulgarian) after the Second World War, their life in West Berlin and the life that she builds between Germany and France when she moved to Paris. Everything after the death of his father. I'm still wondering if I have perhaps lost some hidden meaning ....

Beautiful book, the story of the last woman executed in Iceland is fascinating and well-written, unfortunately however it's very slow, so much so that sometimes I fell asleep while I was reading.

The Garden of Evening Mists by Twan Eng Tan

The Garden of Evening MistsThe Garden of Evening Mists by Twan Eng Tan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a beautiful book that tells of the period of the Japanese invasion of China and Malaysia, to the present day. Through the construction of a garden we observe the unfolding of events that are recounted in the form of memories and discover buried secrets along with the protagonist. A book that will stay with me forever.

Bestattung eines Hundes by Thomas Pletzinger

Bestattung eines Hundes

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Almost-a-journalist Daniel Mandelkern is sent by his editor, and wife, Elizabeth, to interview children's author Svensson. Along the way, he stumbles upon a hidden manuscript of Svensson's and the book switches back and forth between excerpts of the manuscript and Mandelkern while trying to find a meaning of both Svensson and his own life. That said, this book was for me absolutely difficult because Germany was not easy and the author switch times and person every chapter, but that is not so clear in the beginning and also in the end. Strange book that I'm sure I would appreciate more if I read it in my mother tongue.

The 30-Minute Money Plan for Moms: How to Maximize Your Family Budget in Minimal Time

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Some of the very explained tips and tricks to same money cannot be used outside U.S. unluckily, I will use and save all the other suggestions to make my own money plan so not to starve when I will be old. Problem is that I cannot find a job in the mean time....

Lion and Bride (Lion to Hanayome #1)

Calypso

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I didn't like the diaries so I was a little worried about this new book by David Sedaris but I was wrong, because there is a sort a return to the great days of "me talk pretty one day" or "engulfed in flames" and I literally read this book from the beginning till the end in one setting and I finished wanting more and more. I love that he is back, even more now that he is in him middle age together with more or less all his siblings, Hugh and the father who is a character in himself.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Too many people recommended me this book so of course I was absolutely skeptical and in the end didn't like it sooo much. I also have problem with all the recent literature who treats psychological problem in a very light and also funny way but has very little to do with reality, but it's ok, it's fiction.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Call Me by Your Name

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I liked this book, but I found the central part way too long and not so necessary. Anyway I think that for a love story it is not bad, but sometimes a little bit too excessive.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not Her Gargoyle (Not This, #4)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Funny and full of surprise, one of the best plot so far in this series that I'm pretty sure it has more things to tell. Waiting for Ryota's story anyway, better if it has Nikita involved.

THANKS ANNIE NICHOLAS FOR THE DRC!

The Word Is Murder

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this book a lot, even if in the end I had almost everything clear in my mind, but it was not easy. The plot was convoluted but not in a tricky way, there were clear hints all along the way about the culprit and I loved the very bad consultant of police, he seriously is the embodiment of the worst policeman politically incorrect.

THANKS EDELWEISS FOR THE PREVIEW!

Swing Volume 1

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was not a bad story, but it was lacking in desperation, or so to say. The way the couple is trying to rekindle their relationship left me a little bit cold because in my opinion she took the easy way out, as a woman I'm not so sure it would have been my choice of election.

THANKS EDELWEISS FOR THE PREVIEW!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Consider Phlebas

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

It took me ages to read this book, seriously, I had no idea space operas would be so long and boring even if I had great expectations, or maybe due to the fact that I had great expectations. this book brags on and on and on, a story that would have taken more or less 200 pages to be told, is double long and triple boring. Enough Iain M. banks for me.

Garten, Baby!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Dirty-Talking Cowboy (Kinky Spurs, #1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I liked this book even if I didn't like so much Shep, too bad because he is the hero, but Emma is lovely and I love her so much that I kept on reading mostly because of her. Still wondering about the other two brothers on the series....

The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi

The Icarus GirlThe Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Strange book, beautiful but perhaps a little too metaphorical to get lost in an explanation so trivial as that of the third sister, even if virtual. The story might have been different, I will not say better, but perhaps more consistent, if the author had been limited to dealing metaphorically on the difficulty of bringing together two worlds so different as Nigeria and England. But maybe I just did not understand, and all the author wanted was for just to tell the story of a little girl and her alienation along the lines of the sixth sense.
