No One Sleeps in Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid

No One Sleeps in AlexandriaNo One Sleeps in Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a very special book, there are pieces of the history of World War II, passages from the Koran and dreams of the main character, a devout and practicing Muslim who must move to live in Alexandria just before the Second World War. During his research work he meets Dymian which is a Coptic Christian and despite religious differences the two become close friends and share a part of their life for a couple of years. Meanwhile, the world is done with the German domination and the war ends. Nice told though sometimes a bit slow, full of secondary characters and discussions on mysticism and religions. Charming, but Meguid is not my favorite Egyptian writer.
