I had no idea about the concept of Hygge, now I understand it a little bit more and it's like being cozy with oneself. Nothing particularly new, but it was a nice and super fast easy reading.
Non avevo idea del concetto di Hygge, ora ce l'ho e sembra avere a che fare con lo stare bene con se stessi. Niente di particolarmente innovativo, ma é stata una lettura super veloce e piacevole.

Mi sto ancora chiedendo come facciano ad essere cosí felici e, contemporaneamente, avere uno dei piú alti tassi di suicidio del mondo...Comunque é solo un altro libro che parla di candele e di ricette nordiche.

Oh please, if this author was serious she should have said, even en passant, that it may be true that in research Danish resulted as the happiest population but it is also true that Denmark is the place where is sold the highest rate of Prozac. A coincidence? I don't know, but maybe I'm just too cynical.
Oh per favore, se l'autrice fosse stata veramente una ricercatrice seria, avrebbe quanto meno accennato, anche cosí en passant, che per quanto la Danimarca risulti il paese con la popolazione piú felice, é anche quello dove é venduta la piú alta percentuale pro/capite di Prozac. Una coincidenza? Non lo so, ma magari sono solo io che sono troppo cinica.

This my fifth and last book about Hygge, and even if is the one with the best picture, even this one gave me the idea that as far as I'm concerned Hygge is a superficial concept that can be applied almost to anything that can make you happy (especially food and candles), and make you sell useless books. No more Hygge for me, maybe Im just not Nordic enough to believe in it.
Questo é il quinto ed ultimo libro che leggo sull'Hygge e, anche se é quello con le migliori foto, anche questo mi ha portato alla conclusione che l'Hygge sia un concetto superficiale che puó essere utilizzato per descrivere praticamente qualsiasi cosa ci faccia felice (specialmente se cibo o candele), e faccia vendere libri inutili. Niente piú Hygge per me, probabilmente non sono abbastanza nordica per crederci.

Review: Check & Mate

I had my doubts because from Ali Hazelwood I did not expect a YA, but I had a great time reading this book, which obviously reminded me of the "Queen of Chess" series, but with a funnier and less alcoholic protagonist. It's not that it's all that different from this author's other novels, except that sex is only hinted at and all in all the eighteen/twenty year olds to read are also a way to understand the world around me that I often find rather incomprehensible.
Avevo i miei dubbi perché da Ali Hazelwood non mi aspettavo uno YA, ma mi sono divertita tantissimo a leggere questo libro, che ovviamente mi ha ricordato la serie de "La regina degli scacchi", ma con una protagonista piú divertente e meno alcolista. Non é che poi sia cosí diverso dagli altri romanzi di questa autrice, se non fosse che il sesso viene solo accennato e tutto sommato i diciottenni/ventenni da leggere, sono anche un modo per capire il mondo che mi circonda e che spesso mi risulta piuttosto incomprensibile.

I found this little book really well written, only problem I disliked the main character a lot, but this doesn't mean that I was not totally disappointed by the end anyway.
Questo libro é veramente ben scritto, a volte sembrava anche a me di essere in battaglia, purtroppo peró il personaggio principale mi risultava odioso, anche se questo non mi ha impedito comunque di essere delusa dal finale.

I was a little bit disappointed in this story, mostly because I don't really like couples who stay together when they are always fighting, even if they have the power of made up sex behind them; that's why in the I was fed up with the constant bickering of Sophia and Nikolas, even if the background story was not bad at all. Still thinking if I will keep on reading this series.....
Non é che questa storia mi sia poi piaciuta un granché, soprattutto perché non ho mai creduto nelle coppie che stanno assieme solo perché, anche se litigano in continuazione, poi fanno pace alla grande a letto; questa credo sia anche la ragione per cui i dialoghi tra Sophia e Nikolas mi hanno esasperato anche se la storia sullo sfondo non era male per niente. Devo ancora decidere cosa fare di questa serie...

Review: The French Lieutenant's Woman

When I was reading some information on Wikipedia about Byatt's Possession before I got around to reading it (a brick of more than 500 pages always has this questioning effect on me and I feel that I am not ready for this exam) I found this information:
A. S. Byatt, in part, wrote Possession in response to John Fowles' novel The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969). In an essay in Byatt's nonfiction book, On Histories and Stories, she wrote:
Fowles has said that the nineteenth-century narrator was assuming the omniscience of a god. I think rather the opposite is the case—this kind of fictive narrator can creep closer to the feelings and inner life of characters—as well as providing a Greek chorus—than any first-person mimicry. In 'Possession' I used this kind of narrator deliberately three times in the historical narrative—always to tell what the historians and biographers of my fiction never discovered, always to heighten the reader's imaginative entry into the world of the text.
I then decided that I would also read this book and found it almost as good as Byatt's, I was just bothered by the author's triple (if I remember correctly) intrusion into the narrative. It had the effect on me of when Woody Allen in his early films, talking to the camera and commenting on what was happening, without making me laugh though. Other than that an excellent book that seems to be written by a "real Victorian era author."
Quando stavo leggendo alcune informazioni su Wikipedia su Possession della Byatt prima di mettermi a leggerlo (un mattone di piú di 500 pagine mi fa sempre questo effetto interrogazione per la quale non sono preparata) ho trovato questa informazione:
A.S. Byatt scrisse intenzionalmente il romanzo in risposta a La donna del tenente francese di John Fowles. Lisa Fletcher cita un brano di Byatt tratto da un saggio in On Histories and Stories:
«Fowles ha detto che il narratore del diciannovesimo secolo stava assumendo l'onniscienza di un dio. Io penso invece che sia vero il contrario: questo genere di narratore fittizio può insinuarsi più vicino ai sentimenti e alla vita interiore dei personaggi (e anche assumere il ruolo di un coro greco) di qualunque imitazione in prima persona. In 'Possession' ho deliberatamente usato questo tipo di narratore per tre volte nella narrazione storica, sempre per dire ciò che gli storici e i biografi presenti nel romanzo non hanno mai scoperto, sempre per accrescere l'ingresso immaginativo del lettore nel mondo del testo.»
Ho quindi deciso che avrei letto anche questo libro e l'ho trovato quasi bello come quello della Byatt, mi ha solo dato fastidio la triplice (se non ricordo male) intrusione dell'autore nella narrazione. Mi ha fatto l'effetto di quando Woody Allen nei suoi primi film, parlava in camera e commentava quanto stava accadendo, senza farmi ridere peró. a parte questo un ottimo libro che sembra essere scritto da un "vero autore dell'epoca vittoriana".

Not a bad book and, considering the topic non particularly sad also. Just boring and well written.
Non è un brutto libro e, considerato l'argomento, nemmeno particolarmente triste. Soltanto noioso e ben scritto.

Pretty cool story, I enjoyed reading it, even if I saw the plot twist coming.
La storia mi è piaciuta parecchio, anche se il colpo di scena si vedeva arrivare da qualche capitolo prima.....
