I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Not only are Halla and Sarkis excellent characters, with her being brilliant at times, but also Zale and Brindle, the paladins I had already met in other books and the bird of ill omen. All together they contribute to a book that made me burst out laughing out loud several times and was read in a couple of days. Not a bad performance for a novel that is neither a true fantasy nor even a romance.
Non mi divertivo tanto da parecchio. Non solo Halla e Sarkis sono due ottimi personaggi, con lei che é a tratti geniale, ma anche Zale e Brindle, i paladini che avevo giá incontrato in altri libri e l'uccello del malaugurio. Tutti insieme contribuiscono ad un libro che mi ha fatto piú volte scoppiare a ridere a voce alta e che si é fatto divorare in un paio di giorni. Non male come prestazione per un romanzo che non é né un fantasy vero e proprio, né tanto meno un romance.

As often happens to me, I am becoming attached to Jane and David, who this time get caught up in Napoleon's return and she is faced with some very complicated choices. The glamorous world is also quite realistic as is the historical reconstruction. A good book.
Come spesso mi capita, mi sto affezionando a Jane e David, che stavolta vengono coinvolti dal ritorno di Napoleone e lei si trova a dover compiere delle scelte molto complicate. Il mondo del glamour é anche piuttosto realistico cosí come la ricostruzione storica. Un buon libro.

Anche se me l'hanno letta pure stavolta (grazie Radio3), questa novella é pesantissima, non tanto per il linguaggio ricercato e un po' vecchiotto della traduzione scelta, quanto per la storia che in confronto Ivan I'lic é di un'allegria trascinante. Un impiegato di mezza etá, un cappotto, un furto, tutto racchiuso in queste parole c'é uno dei racconti piú agghiaccianti che mente umana possa concepire, una specie di Fantozzi ante litteram, che poi a me non mi ha mai mai mai fatto ridere. La miseria umana in tutte le sue peggiori sfaccettature.

Short essay full of interesting information about the development of brain Imaging and brain scans. The most important parte, in my opinion, is not when will we be able to read some other person's mind, but how could we improve techniques and medication for people who had disease located in the brain: from Parkinson to depression the the fMRI could be so useful to improve what we already know and to change what is actually not working.
Breve saggio pieno di interessanti informazioni riguardanti le tecniche di imaging e di risonanza magnetica funzionale. La parte piú interessante per me, non é stata quella riguardante l'eventuale utilizzo di queste tecniche per conoscere quello che l'altro sta pensando, o se sta mentendo etc.etc. ma piuttosto quella riguardante l'utilizzo di questi strumenti per migliorare farmaci od operazioni chirurgiche su persone che hanno malattie localizzate nel cervello. Dal Parkinson alla depressione la fMRI potrebbe apportare modifiche fondamentali a quello che giá sappiamo e cambiare trattamenti che non stanno funzionando.

Una buena novela, una de las mejores en comparación con los libros de años recientes, en mi opinión. La historia de Richard, Lucia y Eveyln será una de las pocas que recordaré durante mucho tiempo, especialmente porque incluso estando triste se cuenta de una manera divertida y hace que todo sea más fácil y soportable.
Un buon romanzo, uno dei migliori rispetto ai libri degli anni scorsi, a mio parere. La storia di Richard, Lucia e Eveyln sarà uno dei pochi che ricorderò per molto tempo, specialmente perché, anche essendo triste, viene raccontato in modo divertente e rende tutto più facile e sopportabile.
A good novel, one of the best compared to the recent years books, in my opinion. The story of Richard, Lucia and Eveyln is going to be one of the few I will remember for a long time, especially because even being sad it is told in a funny way and makes everything easier and bearable.

This is an historical book that switch from time to time from the chronological order of situations to include the ethical and moral stance of people interviewed on the events that were taking places. It took me ages to read it all, mostly because from the ~middle on, stories were really hard for me to read. The infinite sadness.
Questo é un libro di storia che a volte, diciamo molte volte, passa da un racconto che cronologicamente spiega, o almeno cerca di spiegare, l'evoluzione (anche folle) di alcune situazioni, al punto di vista etico e morale delle persone intervistate dall'autore. Ci ho messo tanto per leggerlo anche perché, specialmente diciamo dalla metà in poi, le storie erano di una tristezza inconcepibile.

Rovelli talked about this book so I read it but I found it lacking of deep meaning, due to my ignorance in biology and philosophy mostly, so I wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but at last is really short even if it is also sometimes boring. But trust me I would have loved to love the book, really.
Rovelli ha scritto di questo libro e quindi me lo sono letto perché a detta sua (di Rovelli) tracciava l'evoluzione tra la coscienza umana e quella animale, del cefalopode in questione per essere precisi: il polpo. Devo dire che per fortuna che era corto, perché spesso mi ingarellavo in frasi come questa: il complesso cefalopode solitario ed idiosincratico e mi chiedevo esattamente in che senso parlasse l'autore. Averlo letto in inglese poi non é che abbia aiutato più di tanto la comprensione e soprattutto non ha alleviato la noia che ogni tanto mi ha sommerso. Però avrei voluto veramente amare questo libro alla follia, quando invece finirlo mi é sembrata già un'impresa...

I didn't like so much the "blog way" of the author to convey a lot of useful information and tips to identify and destroy the pseudoscientist' theories and their faith in whatever is in fashion at this moment (detox, superfood, clean eating, paleo, gluten free, etc.etc.). I would have preferred a more scientific approach to demystifying rubbish, but if it makes the book more readable, for me is ok.
La cosa che meno mi é piaciuta il il linguaggio "da blog" che l'autore usa nel libro, ma ci sono un sacco di informazioni utili e trucchi per identificare e smontare le teorie degli pseudoscienziati e la loro fede in qualunque sia la cosa che va di moda al momento (detox, superfood, clean eating, paleo, gluten free, etc.etc.). Avrei anche preferito un approccio piú scientifico nella demistificazione delle idiozie correnti, ma se questo linguaggio rende il libro piú leggibile, ben venga.

Piccolo capolavoro che parte dalla storia di Jean Clan di Tolosa, accusato e giustiziato senza ragione, per descrivere la storia della tolleranza (religiosa e politica) per arrivarne ad affermare l'importanza e di come sia fondamentale per un mondo civile. Poi uno pensa che è stato scritto alla fine del 1700 e si chiede cosa é andato terribilmente male nel frattempo.

Ascoltato nel podcast di "Ad alta voce" di Rai 3 e probabilmente la mia unica possibilitá di arrivare alla fine di questo racconto veramente tormentato e tormentante. Troppi pensieri negativi mentre lo ascoltavo, se non lo avessi preso ogni giorno a piccole dosi, probabilmente avrei smesso tanto tempo prima, ora che l'ho finito invece, sono contenta perché penso che fosse comunque un piccolo capolavoro.

An hidden historical fact that connects the Jews and the Japanese, and the plan to save as many as they could from Hitler's Germany. I had no idea this thing happened and the authors made a good job, trough the words of many, of recollecting and tell the tale.
Un fatto storico che mi era sconosciuto, e scommetto anche di non essere la sola, che collega gli Ebrei con i Giapponesi, che mettono in atto un piano per salvarne il più possibile dalle leggi razziali promulgate da Hitler. Non avevo idea che una cosa del genere fosse successa e gli autori ritengo facciano un buon lavoro nel raccontare la storia attraverso le voci di molti.

La veritá é che un racconto come questo da un russo di quei tempi non me lo aspettavo e mi ha divertito moltissimo, considerato che di Gogol conoscevo "Le anime morte" e poco altro, grazie quindi a "Ad alta voce" di Rai radio 3, mi appresto anche a godermi "Il cappotto" o mantello che dir si voglia.

I found it this book interesting but I think it is written in a confused way, or maybe it was just too difficult for a deep understanding in my case. I will probably go back to it as soon as I will have enough time to dedicate it.
Questo libro é stato interessante, ma non so se perché trovo sia scritto in modo confuso o perché proprio non ci arrivo, diciamo che mi é sembrato di non arrivare in fondo alle questioni. Magari me lo rileggo appena ho abbastanza tempo da dedicargli.

Not as enthralling as the first, but it certainly serves to find a number of explanations to the mysteries left open by the first book. The interactions between Liam and Aileen still remain among my favorites, much more enemies to lovers than slowburn romance, which I prefer by the way. Peter I have yet to frame well, and I really appreciate Charlotte and hope we have much more space in the future.
Non trascinante come il primo, ma serve sicuramente a trovare una serie di spiegazioni ai misteri lasciati aperti dal primo libro. Le interazioni tra Liam e Aileen restano comunque tra le mie preferite, molto piú enemies to lovers che slowburn romance, che tra l'altro preferisco. Peter devo ancora inquadrarlo bene e apprezzo molto Charlotte e spero che abbiamo molto piú spazio in futuro.
