I thought a bit before writing this review because I usually like King's books almost without reservation, but this time is different. This novel is a long race against time, in which the good cop has to find the dangerous killer who is not serial, he's almost worse, because he is one mass murderer. The characters are, as usual, well-built and tension remains high, the thing that does not work for me are all the tricks that King is forced to use to handle situations in which he got sticked. Can it be so easy to find the passwords for the computer? is it possible for a woman on the edge of the psychotic break to be able to handle an extremely stressful situation and furthermore being another computer genius? is it possible that the cold murder loose his head so easily? is it possible that the best friend of a white retired police officer, closer to 70 than to 60, is a 17 year old black kid? I do not know, there have been too many escamotages in this book, too many solutions of convenience, that somehow I was disappointed, but mind you it is not a bad book, it just seems written by Deaver .....

Ho pensato un pochino prima di scrivere questa recensione perché a me di solito i libri di King piacciono quasi senza riserva, ma stavolta é diverso. Questo romanzo é una lunga corsa contro il tempo, in cui il poliziotto buono deve incastrare il pericoloso killer che non é serial ma quasi peggio, perché é uno sterminatore di massa. I personaggi sono come al solito ben costruiti e la tensione resta comunque alta, la cosa che secondo me non funziona sono tutti i trucchetti che King si trova costretto ad usare per gestire le situazioni in cui si va a chiudere. Possibile che sia tanto facile trovare le password per i computer? possibile che una donna al limite dello psicotico sia anche in grado di gestire una situazione estremamente stressante e che oltretutto sia un altro genio del computer? possibile che il freddo assassino perda la testa tanto facilmente? possibile che il migliore amico di un poliziotto bianco in pensione piú vicino ai 70 che ai 60 si un ragazzino di colore di 17 anni? Non lo so, ci sono stati troppi escamotages in questo libro, troppe soluzioni di comodo, che in qualche modo mi hanno deluso, ma intendiamoci non é un brutto libro, sembra solo scritto da Deaver.....
