Firelight (The Darkest London #1) by Kristen Callihan

Kristen Callihan is a child of the 80’s, which means she's worn neon skirts, black-lace gloves, and combat boots (although never all at once) and can quote John Hughes movies with the best of them. A life long daydreamer, she finally realized that the characters in her head needed a proper home and thus hit the keyboard. She believes that falling in love is one of the headiest experiences a person can have, so naturally she writes romance. Her love of superheroes, action movies, and history led her to write historical paranormals. She lives in the Washington D.C. area and, when not writing, looks after two children, one husband, and a dog — the fish can fend for themselves.

Miranda and Archer are a lovely couple and it is also credible that she falls in love with him without ever seeing him in the face. Rather, it is less interesting that the two maintain a little too long their secrets, I mean in the end if you say that you trust each other how about sharing secrets? However, the solution to the problem of Archer is not obvious, that is the reason why there was not a classic tension drop on the end of the story that usually makes several of these books rather trivial.
Even the murders that characterize the novel, add an extra charm to the book, because more than once I realized that I had identified the wrong culprit, perhaps the murderer is the hardest thing to find out in the book, but I do not want to spoil so I'll stop talking about it now.
In this book there is more than something new: first of all it is a paranormal romance set in regency era and then there are vampires (it was now !!!). It 'the first book in a series, we'll see next.
Once the flames are ignited . . .
                                                       They will burn forever . . .

Dark Witch (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy) by Nora Roberts

Dark Witch (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy)

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I have to admit that usually I really like Nora Roberts, I can also claim to have grown up with some of her books, so when I got the chance to read her latest book and also the first of a new trilogy I jumped at it.
Dark witch, the first volume of the trilogy about the cousins O'Dwyer, has a beautiful setting because it takes place in a small village - County Mayo- that comes out straight from an Irish fairy tale, which was also built around Ashford Castle, as in the best tradition. The action takes place in our days but it has a prequel in 1263 when a healer, the dark witch of course, in order to save her three children tries to kill Cabhan, a sorcerer who wants to steal their powers. The woman curses him and so, almost 900 years later, the spirit of the witch tries to get revenge on the three cousins, reincarnation of the children of the witch.
Iona is the smallest, has a special affinity with horses and especially no bond with her parents, so she decides to leave the United States and get to know the distant Irish cousins. In the cauldron must be routed even friends of the latter, Meara, Boyle and Fin, who clearly have an important role in the strategy to defeat Cabhan that became more and more daring and, more than once, tries to attack Iona, but her powers are growing and so the challenge is getting more dangerous.

The Trolley Problem, or Would You Throw the Fat Guy Off the Bridge?: A Philosophical Conundrum by Thomas W. Cathcart, Daniel M. Klein

The Trolley Problem, or Would You Throw the Fat Guy Off the Bridge?: A Philosophical ConundrumThe Trolley Problem, or Would You Throw the Fat Guy Off the Bridge?: A Philosophical Conundrum by Thomas W. Cathcart
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is definitely an interesting way to revise some broad aspects of philosophy, applying it to a problem that had previously been only theorized, but then really happened: if you were in a position to kill a man to save five others without knowing anyone , would you do it? And based on what philosophical argument would you play God?

Polaroids from the Dead by Douglas Coupland

Polaroids from the DeadPolaroids from the Dead by Douglas Coupland
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Short stories that, at the beginning, are about some people in the audience of one of the last concerts of the Grateful Dead, then a few trips the author and his reaction to the death of Cobain, and, finally, the American political scene in the early '90 and a particular comparison between the story of OJ Simpson and that of Marilyn Monroe.

Chained by night (Moonbound Clan Vampire #2) by Larissa Ione

Larissa Ione
Sito Autrice: Larissa Ione
Serie Moonbound Clan Vampires
2) Chained by night: Leader of the vampire clan MoonBound, Hunter will do what he must to save his people from extinction—or worse, a torturous eternity as vampire slaves and subjects of human experimentation. To keep his enemies at bay, he has agreed to mate a rival clan leader’s daughter in return for peace between the clans and an ally in the looming war with the humans. But survival comes at a price. First, Hunter must break an ancient curse by successfully negotiating three deadly tests. Then he must resist the searing passions of the gorgeous vampire warrior he despises but is bound to mate. Will Hunter stay true to his word? Or will he risk everything for the woman he really loves: the vampire seductress’s identical twin sister?
Chained by night, due out September 30, is the second volume of the new series of Ione, that after the Demonica series, continues the adventure of Moonbound clan, vampires who are fighting to stay free in a world that wants them slaves of humans. In the first volume we met Riker and Nicole and we had a brief taste of what life must have been in a clan; with this second volume, the author introduces us to the chieftain in person: Hunter, beautiful as the sun and slightly psycho, but nothing outstanding, basically if the sins of the fathers shall not fall on the children, let alone those of the mothers.
For the sake of his clan, Hunter decided to take as a mate Rasha, daughter of the clan chief rival, the same who had held captive Nicole in the first book. Rasha does not improve with time, indeed, if possible her bitchyness prevails as always, then despite her relationship with her sister Aylin somehow try to make it seem not as bad as it is. Just as Rasha went to Hunter for the "two-week trial" before the ceremony which will see them linked forever, she and her twin sister Aylin (the vampire maimed who had helped Nicole to escape) are attacked by humans and saved in extremis by a patrol of the clan Moonbound. The classic case of mistaken identity puts the attentions of Hunter on the wrong mate and from that moment things are complicated.
Besides the fatal attraction that sees him tied to the wrong sister, Hunter also has to do with the demon that created vampires and puts him to the test, together with her sister who will want to accompany him, and is transported into the demonic realm to undergo a sort of obstacle course, or he will be forced to give in to the demons his eldest son. This is also the part that I preferred, because the tension at that point in the book was a little languishing between political strategies and the hysteria of Rasha, and in this way  Ione gave new impetus to the novel then proceeds smoothly until the end, according to me (obviously).

Complete Me (Stark Trilogy, #3)Complete Me by J. Kenner
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I finally finished this trilogy, it was not easy, just my compulsion to end something I started. Nikki and Damien are not by far one of my favourite couple and sex is just the same and too much, anyway this last chapter is a little bit better than the first two.

This book was sent to me by Clara Orbit with the alluring statement: "if you like Games of Thrones can not miss this book!" Having said that I would like to explain why the comparison does not stand up and say that Martin comes out also slightly worse . First of all because this promises to be a trilogy, so it has a beginning and an end, which can not be said of the books of Martin. More, the books of Martin provide an infinite number of complicated characters whose stories intertwine and are told by the different actors according to their points of view. Thank God this book is almost always in the third person except when the storytellers is Dug. To finish this book is adventurous, fun and above all easier and easier to read, without anything upbeat to Martin and his plots to which you do not see an end. As this is a trilogy, this book can also be considered self-contained and, in this era of endless sagas, should not be underestimated.
The plot can be summed up in a desire of revenge carried out by Lowa and Spring, which takes both the skin of the king of Zadar for different reasons. As a good knight, and because most of the time he can not do anything else, Dug helps. The various secondary characters, especially the druids, are fascinating, because a little magic in my opinion is always good to relieve the heavy atmosphere that usually associate with these epic battles of the early years by the advent of Christ. Battles are, however, well told, without the author indulging in particular splatter stuff, or at least not much, in order to be credible, without becoming a treatise on the various modes of combat that were used by the armies of that particular historical period.
The structure of the novel, so it's pretty simple, but that does not mean that it is not very funny also, it has a good pace and even the dialogues are hilarious most of the time. I could not help but get attached to the characters and even Lowa, the most difficult to love and appreciate from my point of view at least, finally manages it, with all its flaws and weaknesses and above all his stubbornness, which often drags the other two members of this evil trio, in dramatic situations.
So a great debut for a first book and I hope others will follow soon because I really want to see how the situation evolves when the Romans arrive.

Ostrich: A Novel by Matt Greene

Ostrich: A NovelOstrich: A Novel by Matt Greene
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

As John Green fan I find a lot of similarities in the approach to adolescents dealing with cancer, but this author writing was not easy for me, as i think is any type of stream of consciousness in a foreing language, so I didn't really appreciate this book that, in the beginning, seemed to have a lot of potential. And please no more brackets!

I had the pleasure to re-read this book during a course, and it gave different sensation since last time, when I first read it I was an adolescent, but know it was a pleasure to read it after studying the feminist versione of the "mad woman in the attic".

I absolutely prefer Melville' short stories compared to the whale! In this one everything happened on a ship and the plot is easy but still quite impressive. Remarkable.

Notevole.
